SNM035: Power of Ritual
Our entire lives are built around indoctrination. We are trained to live by patterns and repeat certain behaviors every day. When we leave corporate life behind, we need our own rituals to succeed.
Your Brain is Wired for Repetition
We wake up at the same time, have the same morning routine, drive to work along the same path, and start our day at work all following the same pattern. Our brains love patterns. Once your brain saves a pattern, it no longer has to actively focus on that task. We can either let this system destroy us or enrich us.
Working on your Own
When you work by yourself you have no infrastructure. You can wake up when you want, start work when you want and nobody to shout at you if you sleep in. Your social support disappears. There’s nobody else around you working at the same time.
Without patterns, you have no chance of succeeding.
Ritual Breeds Confidence
We all face stage fright and fear rejection. Sometimes we even fear success. Every professional athlete has a pre-game ritual. They follow a pattern to quiet the butterflies in their stomachs.
Rituals lead to comfort and eventually that feeling of comfort transforms into confidence.

Building a Ritual
The main components of ritual are time, location and pattern of behavior. Start your work sessions at the same time and in the same location. Create a pre-work warm up to get you past your distractions.
Key Points:
- Begin preparing for the day you quit your job
- Your brain is designed to absorb patterns
- Ritual can keep your business successful, even when you’re all alone
